A Conversation with Jill Lepore and Harry Litman

On Sunday, September 7th, Jill Lepore—a best-selling author and renowned professor of history at Harvard—will join us for a conversation with Harry Litman, the creator and host of Talking San Diego. Lepore and Litman will discuss her new book, We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution. It's a dazzling new history for our times of the document that has inspired, protected, and challenged generations of Americans.

Contesting both originalism and the Supreme Court’s monopoly on constitutional interpretation, Lepore argues that the framers never intended for the Constitution to be kept, like a butterfly, under glass, but instead expected that future generations would be forever tinkering with it, improving the machinery of government. As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, Lepore offers a sweeping, progressive, and democratic constitutional history, with many lessons for our troubled present. The volume is certain to be a political and cultural landmark as well as a leading source of constitutional understanding going forward.
